The Grass Is Greener

The Grass Is Greener

The path of starting a business is certainly different for every startup founder. The same is true for a first time home buyer. The way of mowing your lawn is perhaps very different compared to your next door neighbor. Some take longer to cut the grass and trim the edges while others take shortcuts or do the bare minimum. In many cases, the outcome is stark and the results speak for themselves, and those that carefully care for and maintain their lawns reap the biggest rewards.

However, no one becomes a lawn care expert overnight. Your small business or startup is no different than cutting your own grass. Trust me, the first time you cut it will not be as beautiful after you’ve learned how to do it properly a couple times. The more you do it, the more you will see how your stunning and marvelous works come to life. Your neighbors will also notice how much you have grown from being an apprentice to an expert. The same could be said for your startup or small business. There are times when running your small business is rough. These are moments where you have no clue or idea of what you’re doing. Some days, you don’t even know where to start. But if you hang on, you don’t give up, and you learn from the mistakes you’ve made along the way, the more your company will grow from a startup or small business to a giant corporation. One thing most people don’t seem to remember is that the biggest companies like eBay, Apple, and Amazon were once a baby, a startup that faced several challenges just like yours. But these companies were resilient, and they never gave up. They learned how to cut and remove unnecessary weeds and dirt that were in their way in order to see the big picture. They remained consistent and ultimately became some of the largest organizations in the world. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and a company cannot be successful overnight either.

The goal is not to give up. I have seen many startup owners that become frustrated with the process of growing their businesses and through away the towel before they reach the finish line. The key to success is to train yourself to remain consistent even during the most difficult times. Always try to put your startup or company in a position where it can grow gradually. I have seen where some smart founders rather put their startups on pause to accomplish a task instead of terminating it completely. What most business owners fail to understand is that the more you grow as a person, the more your business benefit. Because after all, you are the entity; you are the driver behind the wheel. Thus you need to take measurable time to do a good job and scale the business properly. Kill or weed out any potential treat as soon as possible before it becomes a more serious problem which may cost you more time and money. Remember, the longer you take to mow your grass, the taller it get; the more difficult it becomes for you to get it back to normal. Meaning, the more weeds penetrate or enter into places or areas that they were not supposed to, the more you will have to work in order to save your company. Similarly, if you use to take one hour to cut that grass and do a good job, now it may take you more than 3 hours or more to bring it back the way it used to be or look, just because you had to remove extra debris and fix any damages it might have caused to the house.
Like a garden, it is the same thing with your startup. You need to monitor it daily and stick with it. Even if you can only do a little bit at a time or even if you have to put it on hold or pause for a short while in order to take care of some of the major things or steps that will keep it going. Whatever you have to do to maintain it, and keep it alive. You’ll be surprised to see how much doing a little each day can amount to in the long run. Reach out to local SBA offices for assistance.
